The second part of our tutorial is about finding the right keywords for your website and optimizing the texts on your website.
How do I research keywords and what do I need them for?
Keyword research is at the core of your SEO strategy. Simply put, keywords describe nothing less than search terms. Using keywords, you help search engines understand which search terms should be used in order to find your website.
Therefore, you should invest an adequate amount of time researching keywords. You can find important details that should be considered when choosing keywords, as well as a selection of tools that can make keyword research easy in our blog article:
Afterwards, input up to 5 keywords from your research in your website's edit mode, by clicking Website Builder > Search Engines. The keywords you input here serve as a kind of memory aid for you.
Where exactly do I optimize text on my website?
The most crucial place for keywords to appear are texts on your website. Search engines evaluate these to judge the relevance of your website. Knowing this, you should enrich your texts using the keywords that should lead to these pages following a web search.
When writing your texts, be aware that you compose these as naturally as possible. Google does not like seeing text that serves as an obvious keyword collection and could devalue your website because of it.
The quality of your created content also plays an important role. As well as the so-called user intent, basically what the person searching wants to achieve with their search request. Try to put yourself in the shoes of a website visitor and think about questions you'd have about your website and how you would answer them.
The structure of your website is equally important. In the best case, a level one heading - H1 - is placed at the first position of each page. It should describe what the page is about and, if possible, also contain the main keyword of that page.
You should choose a sub-heading for all other headings, like an H2 or H3. Here, it is recommended to use synonyms or variants of your main keyword from the level one heading. In contrast, you should avoid repeating the main keyword in every heading.
You can make use of the following headings on your Jimdo website:
- H1: level one heading (large)
- H2: level two heading (medium)
- H3: level three heading (small)
Make sure that every heading is followed by a regular text. You can assume that Google does not particularly enjoy several headings in a row. This also contributes to a better overview of your website, which is also important!

Why do I need a custom page title and page descriptions?
When viewing an organic search result of your website in Google's search, the page title will appear on top as a clickable link. You can change the page title by clicking on Website Builder > Search Engines in the top right corner and navigating to SEO > SEO titles. Most browsers will show the title in the browser tab as well. It consists of the Homepage title and Website title.
Every one of your pages has its own title, for instance, "About Me". This is automatically generated using the name of the page you've created.
You can set a custom title for the home page using the Homepage title field. This ensures that the home page is easily recognizable as such within the navigation of your website, while at the same time being distinct from other websites' home pages within search results. Here, you should use words that describe the content of your home page well. In the best-case scenario, you'd use the main keyword that you chose for your home page here as well.
Within search results, the Page description can be found underneath the Page title of your website. It is generated automatically using the first text field on your website. The regular text field takes precedence over the title text here. This is the case for all pages of your website.
You can use the page description to convey to the person searching just why they should click on your website. As a general rule of thumb, a length between 150 and 156 characters is recommended here. You should also customize your page descriptions so that they fit the topic of the respective page.
