In this article, you will learn how to register a domain with Jimdo and what happens after you complete the registration form. Every new, published Jimdo website is accessible via the free *.jimdosite subdomain. Please note that using your own domain is only possible with a paid Jimdo plan. Note: For .de domains and so called gTLDs, you will receive an email to verify your data. Your domain will only be fully registered after you confirm this email. If verification is not completed within 15 days, the domain will be deactivated.
Register your domain
Important:
Your domain is not registered automatically. You must actively complete the registration in your Jimdo dashboard.
Note on special characters
We strongly advise against special characters such as å, ü, ñ, á when registering a domain. Domains containing special characters are converted into Punycode.
Example: tëstwébsite.com → xn--tstwbsite-e4as.com
The special character ß is not supported.
How to register your domain
- Log in to your Jimdo account and select your website.
- Click on Website Builder > Domains in the menu.
- Under New Domain, click Search.
- Choose one of the suggestions or click Browse more options.
- Click Select next to your preferred domain.
- Fill out the registration form completely.
What information is required during registration?
When registering a domain, you will be asked for mandatory information. This information must be accurate.
Please be aware that if this information is not correct, the domain verification will fail. The domain registry may also request additional verification if the information appears incorrect.
- Phone number
- Account type: Business or Individual
- First name and last name
- Full address including country and postal code
- Email address
Note: The email address you enter during registration will be linked to your domain. This is where you will receive important domain related emails including AuthCodes.
Verify your data
After completing the form, an additional step is required:
- For .de domains and gTLDs, you will receive an email to verify your data.
- Open the email and click the verification link.
- Your domain will only be registered after you confirm this email.
If you do not confirm the email, your domain will remain in the status Pending and will not be activated.
The registration process is usually completed within 24 hours after verification.
What are gTLDs?
gTLD stands for generic Top Level Domain. These are domain extensions that are not tied to a specific country.
Examples include:
- .com
- .net
- .org
- .info
- .biz
These domains are managed by international organizations such as ICANN.
In contrast, country specific domains like .de are managed by national authorities such as Denic.
Notes
- Certain rules apply when registering a domain. These depend on the respective registry such as ICANN or Denic.
- You can find supported domain extensions here: Supported domain extensions
- If you want to register an additional domain, see: Register a second domain
- gTLDs are subject to a 60 day transfer lock after certain changes such as new registration, owner change, or provider switch. This restriction is enforced by ICANN and cannot be removed by Jimdo.
