If you need to correct or partially refund a finalised invoice, you can issue a credit note. A credit note records the amount owed back to your customer without modifying the original invoice keeping your records audit ready.
Availability
ℹ️ Availability: Credit notes are available from May 19, 2026. They are available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland on paid Jimdo plans.
When to use a credit note
Use a credit note when:
- You made an error on a finalised invoice (wrong amount, wrong item, wrong tax rate)
- A customer returned a product or cancelled part of a service
- You want to give a full or partial refund
- You need to cancel an invoice entirely
ℹ️ Note: A credit note does not automatically trigger a refund payment. You still need to process the refund to your customer separately (e.g. via Stripe, bank transfer, or cash).
Types of credit note
| Type | Use when |
|---|---|
| Full credit note | You want to fully credit the entire invoice amount. |
| Partial credit note | You want to credit specific items or a partial amount from an existing invoice. |
| Cancel invoice | You want to fully cancel a finalised invoice. Jimdo creates a cancellation document that negates the original and links the two for your records. |
How to issue a linked credit note
- Go to Payments > Invoices in your dashboard.
- Open the finalised invoice you want to credit.
- Click Issue credit note.
- Select the line items you want to credit, and enter the amount (full or partial).
- Review the credit note and click Complete > Issue invoice.
- Send the credit note to your customer.
How to cancel an invoice
- Go to Payments > Invoices in your dashboard.
- Open the invoice you want to cancel.
- Click Cancel invoice.
- Confirm your action.
⚠️ Important: Cancelling a paid invoice does not automatically refund your customer. You will see a warning reminding you to process the refund separately.
What your customer sees
When you send a credit note, your customer receives it in the same way as a regular invoice as a PDF. The credit note references the original invoice number so both documents are clearly linked. By default, the option to email the buyer is enabled, but you can disable it and send it later if needed.
Credit notes and your records
Credit notes do not delete or modify the original invoice. The original stays in your dashboard exactly as it was. Both documents are linked via a Related documents panel, so you always have a full audit trail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit a credit note after issuing it?
No. Like invoices, credit notes are locked once finalised.
Does issuing a credit note automatically refund my customer?
No. A credit note is a document that records the refund obligation. You still need to process the actual refund payment separately.
Can I issue a credit note for more than the original invoice amount?
No. The total amount credited cannot exceed the original invoice amount.
What is the difference between a credit note and cancelling an invoice?
Cancelling an invoice fully negates it and moves it to a Cancelled status. A credit note allows you to partially or fully credit specific amounts while both documents remain in your records.
My invoice was already sent. Can I still issue a credit note?
Yes. Credit notes can be issued against any finalised invoice, regardless of its status (Finalized, Sent, Overdue, or Paid).
Will the credit note appear in my invoice list?
Yes. Credit notes appear in Payments > Invoices alongside your regular invoices, with a Credit note badge for easy identification.
